November 2007
Local filmmaker Christina Morales Hemenway will be showing a trailer to her latest feature film, Naked Angel, on Sunday, November 18, at the Michigan Theater screening room. Tickets can be purchased to see the trailer, followed by a complimentary showing of her previous film, Dreammaker. The event is open to Ann Arborites who are interested in getting involved in her film, Naked Angel.
“This is an exciting production,” says Morales Hemenway. “Naked Angel is a mystic drama about an angel who is trying to earn her wings but falls in love with a mortal man and then finds she can no longer hear the voice of God.”
“One thing that is especially exciting about producing this film is that it will be a community filmmaking experience,” she adds. “We plan to hire as many local people as possible, get local businesses involved, and showcase Ann Arbor locations in the film.” She will also use her connections in Los Angeles to create a bridge between the two film communities to optimized distribution.
This film is being made differently from most feature films. The typical path goes from the filmmaker, to the agent, to the production company, to the distributor, to the theater, and finally to the consumer. Instead, Morales Hemenway is partnering with the Michigan Theater to go directly to the consumer. Her goal is to raise $200,000 and to shoot the film entirely in Ann Arbor in April 2008.
People interested in seeing Naked Angel can either buy an advance general admission ticket for $10 or an opening night gala ticket for $250, If you’d like to become an Executive Producer, you can share in the films returns and even have a cameo in the film and get 100 tickets for $1000 per share.
Morales Hemenway’s previous film, Dreammaker, tells the story of a psychic named Esmeralda who manipulates her Hollywood clients. Both Christina and her husband Brent appear in the movie playing a married couple. The film has won awards for Audience Choice, Best Actress, or Best Feature Film in every festival in which it has played and most recently secured distribution with Bruder Releasing Inc. (BRI). Since its September 2005 premiere at the Michigan Theater, it has played in Los Angeles, Chicago, Louisville and Rome, Italy. And it will be back at the Michigan Theater on November 18.
Morales Hemenway grew up in Ann Arbor. She split her time between Pioneer and Community high schools, graduating in 1988 with awards in singing and acting. Her family owns Elmo’s Main Street T-shirts, where tickets will also be available after the event.
